Art opens the eye.

I know I'll never really appreciate the wonderful world and people I'm surrounded by, however, art is a single, slow step in the right direction, and, they say, "Direction is more important than speed". With luck, from time to time the window of the eye cracks open.

For example: often I've been out painting something, say a rock, for 5 hours, and suddenly realize:  "This is like the first time I've really seen a rock!" I'm like an infant picking up a rock, rolling it around, studying it in complete amazement.

So the Freudian dilemma: Once we discover what's good, what works for us, what evolves us, WHY don't we go there more often? Why do we waste so much time deliberately spinning our tires?

Robert Henri claims "good painting is more about what goes on INSIDE the artist in the process of painting than what the canvas depicts".
