The inspiration for my new, more abstract paintings is two fold, equally coming from our surrounding desert rocks and desert varnish that streaks beautifully down rock surfaces and the many gorgeous petroglyphs left by native peoples.  In each painting I try to abbreviate the texture, lines, colors and figures I have observed over the 30 years I have explored the Colorado Plateau.  These are the elements that still excite me and draw me closer as an observer/painter.  The figures (or shamans if that's what you see) are not intentional and surprisingly appear to me as I paint each work, as a result of line placement and color choice.  What I hope to convey is a feeling of grounded peace or that deep sense of awe that
I experience when I'm surrounded by monumental red rock streaked with desert varnish and, at times, also includes a petroglyph spiritual being who is half human, half bird. Along with that feeling of grounded peace and awe I receive a blessing by being what feels like the inside beauty of the world - I hope these paintings bring you that experience as well!
