This is a plein air painting painted at Natural Bridges National Monument. It was painted on an overcast morning with rain in the forecast. I almost finished the piece and realized the clouds were purple and growing fast, with the wind gusting. I took the painting off the easel and started to pack up, but realized I wouldn't make it back to my jeep before being drenched. Right behind me was a small overhang in the rocks, just big enough for me to crouch under with the painting. The rain hit hard, then as it was letting up, a small waterfall developed inches from my face. I waited patiently for the storm and waterfall to run the course, then emerged to see waterfalls everywhere below, silvery ribbons on the rock. A painting session always begins with goal of creating a tangible product, but the experiences along the way are often the larger prize for the artist.
